Here is my creation for 2023, the THOR skid plate for the fantastic Suzuki V-Strom 800DE!

Like all my skid plates, this one is also the result of hundreds of hours of work, from an initial design phase, to prototyping, until reaching this final product, which fits perfectly with the V-Strom.

The idea was to create a skid plate capable of enhancing the line of the motorbike and improving its protection compared to the original, and I think I succeeded, here are its technical characteristics.

The skid plate can be assembled with different side panels, which guarantees compatibility with the majority of crash bars on the market. Scroll the products images to see it.
The mesh is shipped already installed, it protects from stuff getting past the flaps of the skid plate.

MATERIALS

There are many types and alloys of aluminum. Each with specific characteristics that make it more suitable for one use or another.

Having worked on aluminum sheet metal for over 30 years and transformed tens and tens of tons of it every year, we can say that we know this material quite well.

The material with which we built the skid plate of the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is the best material for this use, the same alloy among other things with which many luxury car parts are built.

It is a very hard material, but it can be bent and welded and then recovers its natural hardness on its own without the need for heat treatments.
To be clear, there are materials that are harder but which crack when folded and others that are too soft and once “cooked” involuntarily through welding they remain “cooked” (soft) even once cooled.
This aeronautical-derived material has unique characteristics including resistance in a saline environment.

WEIGHT

Complete with all its brackets and catalyst protection etc. the Thor for Suzuki 800DE weighs 4.19 kg.

Under the bike there are weights that you cannot feel and let us tell you that we prefer to return home in the evening after a trip in the woods than to save 1 kg in areas that do not influence the center of gravity and consequently the rideability.

FIXINGS TO THE FRAME

The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE was already born with a cradle on which to mount a skid plate, and our Thor was tailor-made for this cradle.

We have six very robust attachment points in well-designed areas. No contact points or attachments to the engine.

WELDS

The skid plate is TIG welded externally by hand with meticulous checks to ensure the success of this process.

Internally it is completely welded in wire aluminum (Mig). The welding machine we use is of the latest generation and works brilliantly. The welds are large, robust and visible, we do not remove them as I believe functionality takes precedence.

On a rally or adventure motorbike, visible welds, if well done, are a touch of quality.

Each welding is done personally by GpMucci who doesn’t want to know about delegating to third parties.

THICKNESSES

Maximum thickness means maximum robustness. But also the maximum weight.

We have thus diversified with the bottom and the lower front part of a thickness of 5mm.

The sides and the highest part of the skid plate instead have a thickness of 3mm. We recently made shims for an off road VW van and the thickness of the engine skid plate for this 2 tonne vehicle was the same as our motorcycle skid plates which weigh ten times less. But we prefer not to risk it.

We know that you then rightly treat motorbikes very badly.

VENTILATION

One problem that arose when we started mass-producing skid plates was the tendency of modern motorcycles to overheat.

Increasingly stringent anti-pollution regulations require solutions that have the effect of heating the engine and exhaust unknown to motorcycles from twenty years ago.

Enthusiasts wanted skid plates that were as “closed” and protective as possible.

But closed it meant heating up the engine a lot. We invented solutions such as fins which manage to produce a “lamination” of the air flow, that is, to eliminate part of the turbulence and to guarantee an almost total passage of air.

The choice to create V-shapes of the skid plate under the radiator not only has an aesthetic value but serves to try to convey as much air as possible around the engine block and help its cooling.

Actual and comparative tests in summer under severe conditions proved us right. To ventilate more than the Thor you have to ride without a skid plate and maybe that’s not enough.
